Driving down the cost of Motoring

There are several ways that people can save money when it comes to motoring. Maintenance costs can be driven down to the bare minimum if you drive safely, look after your car and shop around for the best deals on all aspects including MOT, insurance, etc.

Some tips on how to save money are provided below. The list is not exhaustive but sufficient to consider as a starting point into saving money on motoring costs.

1. Shop around for the best car insurance deal

There are several price comparison websites now available to help you search for the best deals on almost anything from utilities, phones, broadband as well as car insurance. It’s fairly simple to use these websites and takes just a few minutes to find the right deal for you. Although the cheapest deal may not be the best for you as it may not provide the full cover you require, try looking at both the cost of the policy & what the policy covers to get the right deal and the best cover for you.

2. Off road parking

If you have off road parking via a driveway or garage then use it. This could drive down the cost of your car insurance significantly. It could also decrease the chances of your vehicle being damaged via drunk drivers as well as speeders.

3. Don’t get caught

Try to avoid speeding. Always leave enough time for your journey to avoid this because if you get caught on camera for speeding then this could significantly increase your insurance premiums. At the same time, you could be facing a hefty speeding fine. Therefore, it’s definitely not a good idea to speed.

4. Ensure your car has some form of security measure

If you add security measures such as steering lock, alarms and immobilizers to your car then you could potentially decrease the cost of your insurance premiums further as you are in effect reducing the chances of car theft.

5. Pedal power

Change the way you drive. Accelerate gently and gradually from a standstill and keep a two second time gap or a fair distance from the car in front of you so that you’re not having to brake harshly.  This will generally help you save on fuel as well as cash.
