The strings attached to its government sponsored loans requires General Motors to ruthlessly shed unprofitable divisions, including Saturn, Hummer, Saab, and Pontiac. The best car chase scenes seemed to include Pontiac’s GTO or Trans Am muscle cars.  Who can ever forget the movies Smokey and the BanditorTwo Lane Blacktop with a raging GTO?  Also on the block is the big selling Pontiac Solstice. Even though the Solstice is a clear winner, it can’t carry the dead weight of the Pontiac line by itself. The eliminate of the Pontiac Solstice effects not only the entire assembly, but also those business which also sell after market parts.

Convertible owners are enthusiast about their car, and sharing their love for it. The Pontiac Solstice started life to strong editorial reviews and passionate owners. As soon as the death knell of Pontiac went up, grass roots efforts sprang into action. This site was started by enthusiasts to foster the online community into action, to help persuade General Motors management that the Pontiac Solstice is certainly worth preserving.  Although brand new, fans are already flocking to this website, and activity will certainly pick up as the Solstice’s demise becomes near.

Unfortunately, it’s simply too early to tell what might happen. There are still a lot of gyrations left to play out in this complex business drama.  As far as the Pontiac Solstice itself, it’s fate is still unknown. While General Motors envisions shutting down the Pontiac division in 2010, they might still keep profitable lines active. This would be an enormous relief for the fans, the workers, and the businesses (such as the Pontiac Solstice windscreen / windblocker / wind deflector) that support this wildly popular car. Even though the future of the Solstice is unknown, one can be sure this car will always have an active legion of fans.

Pontiac Solstice-All of the Fun at Half the Price

Drooling over the Solstice on the show room floor is not unheard of. The Pontiac Solstice combines raw power, a raft of amenities, and knock-em-over styling causing double takes. One needs to go back into the time machine until the 1959 Bonneville to refer back to any other worthy Pontiac split-screen. This car challenges the BMW Z4 and Audi TT at half the price.

Option-wise, the Solstice comes in two trims, the base package and the GXP. The basic package comes with a 173 horse power, 2.4 liter four-cylinder engine that’s still sips the gas. The souped-up GXP package takes 260 hour power turbocharged engine into a 2.0 liter, four cylinder engine. No matter the engine pick, either engine is mated to a five speed auto or manual transmission. The basic model includes electronic traction and stability control, limited slip rear differential, four anti-lock disc brakes, impressive 18 inch alloy wheels, and satellite radio. If the base package isn’t enough, the GXP then adds dual exhaust tips, a faster responding transmission, leather to the steering wheel and shift knob, and plush carpeted floor mats.

There’s certainly a lot to enjoy about the Solstice, it’s certainly not a perfect car. The steering is not crisp. The Solstice can be a fat hog of a car at over 3000 pounds. Also, coming out of corners, the Solstice tends to hang on. Coming off the line, the acceleration can be a bit lethargic. This car wouldn’t make a passing grade in ergonomics, with components illogically positioned and plastic components littering the interior. Trunk space is smaller than your closet.

While the Solstice has some minor bummers, the best feature of the Solstice is its body lines. Pontiac certainly isn’t known as a style leader, which the Solstice corrects. The duel-hump body work of the Solstice provide a wonderfully futuristic look. Strangers will come up and strike up conversations about your Solstice. The merits of this car decidedly weigh on the plus side. Those looking for top-down driving excitement will certainly be pleased with this choice.

Deeply Discounted Prices on Saturn Cars as GM Discontinues Brand

Saturn cars on sale

People shopping around for cars and auto loans should take notice: You might have an opportunity to get a brand new Saturn car for a used-car price. The same thing goes for Pontiacs.

General Motors is discontinuing both brands, so Pontiac and Saturn cars are basically going into fire sale mode now. I am still trying to understand exactly how this sale works, so perhaps someone out there who is more business savvy could leave a comment to fill in the missing information.

Incentives plus price slashing

First of all, GM says it will pay dealers “$ 7,000 for every new Saturn or Pontiac on their lot that is moved to rental-vehicle or service-vehicle fleets operated by the dealers,” says the Wall Street Journal. So, basically, GM will pay dealers to take ownership of the cars. That’s kind of odd. Right?

Then, dealers must label these cars as “used” because technically the dealers are the first owner, not the customer. Of course, most of the cars will not actually be used, and they’ll still have zero miles (or just test drive miles) on them.

A little assistance?

So, what am I missing here? It doesn’t make a lot of sense. Why doesn’t GM just give bonuses for Pontiac and Saturn cars sold? Why not just slash prices instead of going through the process of justifying and slapping a “used” label on there?

I’m kind of waiting for the whole thing to make sense. The brands have gotten the big ugly axe, so obviously there isn’t much, if any, value left in either Saturn or Pontiac brands. I don’t know what to say. Let me know what you think.

Anyway, regardless of exactly what GM and its dealers are doing and why they are doing it, you could be able to buy Pontiac and Saturn cars for super cheap, so if you’re thinking about getting a new car sometime soon, you might want to set your plan in motion sooner rather than later.

The Pontiac Firebird is perhaps one of the most classic cars ever made, thanks to various popular culture references connected to it.  It was first made in 1967 by Yankee automaker General Motors, thru their Pontiac division.  The firebird was introduced together with its cousin in the GM family, the Chevrolet Camaro, with which it shared a platform.  As with its rivals, it was introduced head-on with the Mercury Cougar of Ford.  The engines powering the Firebird from the start and for almost all of its existence until its last year in 2002 were V8 engines.  First, Pontiac engines powered it to 1982 when GM engines were used.  Since its last appearance in 2002, no efforts have been made to revive the line.  The possibility of a Firebird revival has further been made impossible by the discontinuation of the Pontiac brand after 2010.  This is in spite of the announcement that the Chevrolet Camaro will make a return for the 2010 model year.  

The 1st generation of Firebirds was available from 1967 till 1969 and was assembled in Pontiac facilities in wagon Nuys, California and Norwood, Ohio.  It was available in 2-door coupes and convertibles.  In 1969, a Trans-Am package for the Firebird was introduced, which only furthered the approval for the ar.  A Trans-Am package featured upgraded suspension, handling, and hp.  Cultured differences with the Trans-Am package include mist lights, wheels, hoods, and spoilers.  The second generation of Firebirds and Trans-Ams from 1970 to 1981 was responsible for cementing the brand in Yank pop culture.  The 2-door convertible was dropped.  The second generation automobile was seen in the films Smokey and the Bandit, Hooper and Smokey and the Bandit II.  The third generation, which was available from 1982 till 1992, was featured in the movies Alphabet City and Smokey and the Bandit Part 3.  The television show Knight Rider featured a talking car, KITT, which was actually an altered Trans-am of the third generation.  Unfortunately, declining sales made General Motors discontinue the brand, with the Pontiac GTO replacing it.

Lucky enough to be around in the 70s

Those among us fortunate enough to be around in the 70s when this amazing automobile came out drool whenever we regard it.  Imagine getting a vehicle from the factory with a 455 cubic inch engine in it!This automobile kicked butt!  Then if you probably did some work, like we probably did to ours, as in having the engine blue outlined, balanced and a load more, it did even better.  Let’s just say it was doing miles better then one hp per cubic inch!

This was the era of Smokey and the Bandit movies.  Good ole boy Burt Reynolds drove a black Trans Am in the movie and everyone and his uncle all of a sudden wanted one.  Of course, by that time the ones they were selling were watered down versions with no where near the power of the original ones. 

Since we’re not sure of the statute of restrictions, let’s just say that any stories are presumed to start’Once on A Time’. 

One of our favorite stories is when we were getting onto dawn road late one evening and a Camaro rolled up next to us and started revving his engine, well you can imagine the rest.Here was a poor soul who had not a clue of what was in store.  Since we do not believe in street racing, it definitely was a good thing we were both going onto the entrance ramp.  When we were satisfied that no one was on the parkway at that time of night, we let the Beast Out To Play.  We never did see any more then his fading headlights.

One of the funniest moments was when we lived in upstate NY and my hubby went to the store to pick something up and this guy in a Mustang 2 pulled up next to him and my man had fun ( hey, we are all titled sometimes ).  As Chuck tells it : You see at that time a local car dealer was running a television spot featuring a Mustang 2 just destroying a Trans Am.  So this gentleman pulls up next to me, gunning his engine for all he is’s worth.  The light changes, he chirps his tires and flashes me a big smile as he is taking off.  Well, I idle away from the light,give it sufficient gas in first to pull even with him, then drop the hammer, lighting up both tires, throw second, light them up again and then ease off.  Drive down the road to the store.

When I come out of the store this bloke has finally got there and is waiting for me and says,’but the commercial says Mustangs will beat the pants off the Trans Am.’ I very blithely replied,’Not this Trans Am!’

They don’t make them like this anymore.  It’s sorrowful when you concentrate on it!  Those of us who lived and grew up in the era of the muscle automobiles, street rods, saturday night cruise nights were very,very fortunate.  I feel sorry for the youth of today that they missed out on all of this. 

So what happened to that great 455 Trans Am, sadly the cruel upstate NY winters aren’t kind to autos and rust took the Trans Am from us.  However, we probably did replace it – with a customised 1973 Vette, which we drove cross country to California, but that’s a full nother story!

The Pontiac Solstice has bagged an award just recently.  It was named the most serious car of the Year for 2006.  This award was given by Edmunds.com.  Edmunds.com is one of the premier online resources for info about cars and vehicles and other stuff related to the auto industry.  This award is also part of the fifth yearly Edmunds.com Consumers’ Most Wanted vehicle awards. 

Last November, the Pontiac Solstice already received the same award.  Now this time, when the buyers judged vehicles, it again bagged that same title.  This exemplary automobile has gained and took virtually half the consumers’ votes.  It was followed by the Honda Civic, and the Chevrolet Corvette. 

According to Karl Brauer, the editor in CEO of Edmunds.com,’It’s always engaging to tap into the minds of clients.  These yearly awards provide insight into consumers’ collective impressions while the Edmunds.com Forums and our social networking website CarSpace give glimpses into individual opinions each day of the year.’ Brauer also added,’The domestic automakers made some real traction this year among the shoppers who voted.  Domestic cars won twice as many awards as they actually did last year – a good sign for Chrysler, Ford, and GM.’
